Learn About Edisto Island
Benaly Island (Benaly Centreland) is the fictional setting of Drome Chronicles, Volume I. The island, however, is based on a real location in the United States of America. Edisto Island is the home of the original "Brown Clan." The stories about Dreamers comes directly from the "superstitions" of Abigail Brown of Edisto Island, South Carolina. Many of the descriptions will come from the first hand accounts of Veracity Williams' childhood memories or of the memories of Brown family members who were raised on the island.

Gullah Language of Edisto Island

This video shows a portion of Edisto Island that has remained relatively segregated. The people who inhabit these areas of Edisto are typically people who have retired to the island or have built beach houses on the island over the past 30-40 years. Most African Americans use a different portion of the island for beach purposes and are charged a fee as part of the state park.

Gullah (also called Sea Island Creole English and Geechee) is a creole language spoken by the Gullah people (also called "Geechees" within the community), an African-American population living on the Sea Islands and in the coastal regions of the American States of South Carolina, Georgia and northeast Florida. Dialects of essentially the same language are spoken in the Bahamas.
